A Green Monster Smoothie Without Bananas

My very own Green Monster Smoothie

One thing that I’ve learned from most of the healthy living, fitness and nutrition blogs out there is taht almost everyone has made their own Green Monster Smoothie. So I decided to try it out myself. But most of the recipes that I found contained banana, and we don’t have any bananas in our fruit bin right now. Rather than take a trip to the grocery store, I just made up my own smoothie recipe filled with fruits, oats, spinach and some other good stuff. Also, in the pictures, most of the ingredients are in measuring cups, but don’t pay attention to that. I tweaked most things after the first blend.

Spinach first...

I remember reading somewhere that the spinach should always come first so that the blades can cut it up nicely.

Strawberries

I cut up two strawberries, but ended up adding another one later on.

Chopped up apple

Healthy oats

No idea what possessed me to add oats, and I don’t know if they affected the smoothie at all…

Nom nom nom!

From bottom to top: spinach, strawberries, apples, oats, peanut butter, milk and ice cubes.

Getting ready to blend!

Starting to blend…

and…

Bird's eye view

I was so pumped to pour this little monster out and give it a taste.

The verdict? This monster was a killer…in a good way! I loved spinach before I tried this, and I was surprised that the entire flavor the spinach was masked by the fruit. It was sweet, but I could still tell that it was good for me. Definitely a nutritious breakfast smoothie!

  14. I recently started doing green smoothies and realized a few things: (1) that I hate the taste of banana in a smoothie (although I like eating bananas) and (2) bananas have a tendency to give me stomach aches. Since I didn’t have bananas around on some occasions, I made my green smoothie with strawberries, blueberries, spinach (or kale and even arugula!) and added coconut milk (it’s non-dairy, tastes great and doesn’t give you tummy aches) which gives your smoothie a bit of creaminess. I’ve also tried plain Greek yogurt which really wasn’t too bad and gave the smoothie a creamy and mild tangy flavor. I’ve used frozen fruit and found some frozen peaches which are really a nice flavor in a smoothie. I also add water to make it a little thinner. All in all I’m experimenting and enjoying the journey!

  15. I’ve been making spinach smoothies every morning lately, but today I found myself all out of bananas. Thanks for this recipe! I’m drinking it right now; it’s really good. Only problem is that I added way more peanut butter than you said. Oops. Good thing I like peanut butter. ;)
I usually keep it simple: spinach, banana, orange juice and whatever fruit I have lying around (peaches, strawberries, grapes, etc.). This recipe is a nice change.

  16. Thank you sooooo much. I’m allergic to bananas and can never find a smoothie recipe without them.
